What was the most valuable piece of career advice that you received?
Get out of your comfort zone
–  Shortly after I got my first promotion at Gett, I had to present the monthly performance to the global management team. It was very new to me. Even though I knew I could do the job well, I was nervous and insecure - the meeting did not go well.
At the weekly meeting with Dave (Waiser, Gett Co-Founder and CEO, my direct manager) I told him I felt uncomfortable. I was unhappy with myself. Dave took a paper and draw a circle and he said, inside this circle is your ‘comfort zone’, and outside this circle there is everything that’s interesting.
By stepping out of our safe environment, we can better challenge ourselves and broaden our understanding of a topic. Sometimes it can be daunting having these new experiences, but doing it means that you can find new things you enjoy and are good at which can be translated back into business.

What was the worst piece of business advice that you received?
I was once given some advice about how to build the best team. I was told to put more emphasis on experience and less emphasis on passion and team dynamics. Of course, this does not work - now every new hire we make is evaluated on experience but also on cultural fit and their ability to work together as a team.

What advice would you give to someone starting their career in the tech industry?

Don’t be afraid to aim high and grow -  it is incredibly important not to be afraid to make mistakes but, if they do occur, the key is to learn from them and act quickly to correct them. Technology is such a dynamic and transformative sector that it would be almost impossible to avoid making errors, however, these errors should always be viewed as an opportunity to improve.
I make mistakes all the time and I encourage my team to employ that very same mentality. The most important thing to remember is to not make the same mistake twice.

What tips would you give to someone aiming for a c-level position?

Anything you do, do it with excellence – it’s not worth carrying out a task unless you complete it to the very best of your ability. Many people struggle to identify what they are truly brilliant at and enjoy but, by being adaptable and open to trying different things, you can help to find your career-destiny. If you don't have passion for what you're doing, move on immediately. Life is too short, and it takes real passion in order to be exceptional at something. At Gett for example, I have held a number of different roles. Each role opened a new world of opportunities for me, things I didn’t know I can do, or I find interesting, and taught me something new that helps my job today. I saw every opportunity as a priceless one, and that’s what always brought me the next one.

Are you particularly proud of any career advice that you’ve given or the career route/development of anyone you’ve mentored?
One of the most fascinating things about mentoring is giving your team members the confidence to develop themselves. I don’t feel I can take the credit for the development work they’ve done. All I do is to show them that they have what it takes: to go above and beyond their limits.
