Cable continues to crumble: HBO, Cinemax coming to Sony's PlayStation Vue service

The slow unraveling of traditional cable bundles continues. On Thursday, HBO announced that both its namesake channel and Cinemax are coming to PlayStation Vue, Sony’s superb live TV streaming service. It’s the first time either channel will be available for standalone subscription.

They don’t come cheap, though. HBO and Cinemax will cost $15 each. PlayStation Vue’s base plans cost $30 to $45 per month, though you don’t need to subscribe to Vue’s core service to sign up for HBO or Cinemax. Subscribers will also gain access to the HBO Now apps available on a wide swathe of devices.

Not so coincidentally, HBO Now is also coming to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 consoles. Its on-demand streaming of HBO shows should complement Vue nicely if you’re planning to watch Sony’s live TV streaming through your console. You can also access Vue via Amazon’s Fire TV, Google’s Chromecast, or Roku set-top boxes, and yes, those all support HBO Now as well.

HBO, HBO Now, and Cinemax will launch on PlayStations on October 2, ahead of HBO’s new Westworld series.

The story behind the story: The last bastions of pricey cable bundles are starting to crumble. HBO was notoriously slow to embrace Internet streaming, and you can even stream NFL games easily now. Sure, paying separate fees for all these services can add up quickly if you need to watch them all, but one of cord cutting’s strengths is its flexibility. Cord-cutting is a bigger bargain than ever—and much more viable than ever, too.
