Have you been to the NoMoreRansomware site? Me neither. It’s too dangerous.
They say it’s safe because it’s created by the combined efforts of the European Cybercrime Centre, the Dutch Police, Kaspersky Labs and Intel Security. That’s what they say, but who can you trust these days? Those names inspire confidence, but that’s what confidence men trade on. There’s a clue in the name.
Ever since that so-called philanthropist emptied my bank account, after he promised me a million pounds, I’ve been very wary about who I trust online. If a Nigerian Prince will diddle you, after you’ve tried to help him unlock his fortune, then what man or woman can you have faith in?
The NoMoreRansomWare site had 2.6 million visitors in the first 24 hours. You know what that means don’t you? Even if this portal is a genuine act of philanthropy, it will only inspire imitators. As soon as this portal inspires confidence, that will encourage hundreds of thousands of people to drop their guard, which in turn will inspire all kinds of predators to set up traps. With names like NoMoreRansomWire, these lookalike sites and disguised emails will trade on the confidence inspired by the noble intentions of Europol and co.
Still, at least they are doing something.
Security is everyone’s top priority now, according to EACS. The world’s CIOs, IT directors and IT managers seem to have abandoned all hope as they choke in a suffocating atmosphere of fear, if I’m interpreting this study correctly.
For the moment, transformation of business and society is off the agenda, says EACS MD Mike Dearlove. Everyone is too scared of attackers and we’ve all become imprisoned by our fears.
As we all know, the IT industry is capable of unlocking wealth, value and immense social benefits, if it wasn’t trapped by the awful constricts placed upon it by a hideous regime of unelected tyrants who have colonised the internet.
Still, that represents a massive business opportunity. Those poor vulnerable CIOs would pay a fortune if we could help them smuggle their precious assets out of this ‘Spanish prison’. We just need to be able to give these marks a convincer and we can win their confidence.
