What was the most valuable piece of career advice that you received?
Always enable people to act and don't be a ‘blocker’ to innovation and new ways of working. Make sure you listen to people and don't pre-judge; you should always try to understand problems first and identify where you can help to achieve the best outcome. 

What was the worst piece of business advice that you received?
‘Follow the rules and you'll go far!’ On the contrary, sometimes you really have to break away from tried and tested ways of working to achieve new and exciting things. 

What advice would you give to someone starting their career in the tech industry?
I would urge people to look for a company that is truly forward thinking. The best companies are those which embrace new ideas and genuinely want to invest in you and your career. 

What tips would you give to someone aiming for a c-level position?
Don’t purely look for a C-level team position. It’s better to keep your eye out for a team which is already doing great things, one which you can really learn from and who you feel inspired to work with. In turn, they will help you to become successful. 

Are you particularly proud of any career advice that you’ve given or the career route/development of anyone you’ve mentored?
I'm particularly proud of a lady who joined me as a junior HR advisor several years ago and now has a much broader, global people director role than me… I met her recently and she’s still down-to-earth, friendly and extremely well thought of by her organisation. I also have an amazing team around me and some very experienced people who I’ve worked with for over a decade.
