Job title: CEO

Company: BlueOptima

Industry: Software

Location: London, UK

Years’ of experience: 10, as BlueOptima CEO

What is your favourite personal gadget?
My Garmin GPS – I track my bike commute into the office every day. I firmly believe there are a great many urban, social and health benefits to be had with more people cycling to work. There is also some friendly competition on cycling metrics in the office.

Do you have a favourite piece of personal software?
Continuing with my enthusiasm for cycling, it would have to be Strava, which measures my athletic performance – should there be any.

What was the first piece of technology you got really excited about?
The Apple Newton, a crucial precursor to iPhone, launched in 1993, discontinued in ’98.

What device improves your life most at work?
Simply my headphones. They allow me to isolate myself from the noise of our ever-busier office when I need some serious thinking time.

What software keeps you most productive at work?
Base and Xero (CRM and accounting solutions respectively). As SaaS solutions, they are ideal for globally distributed teams such as we have. These are marketed towards start-ups and SMEs, but I would recommend them as suitable for larger enterprises too. Keeping on top of Finance and Sales used to divert too much of my time away from ensuring that our product continues to remain market leading and that our roadmap contains the leaps of capability that it should.

Is there any technology that has become extinct that you would like to resurrect?
That would have to be the Apple Newton. The notepad paradigm still has untapped user demand. Even with amazingly capable smartphones people bring notepads to meetings.

Is there any technology you would personally recommend that you don’t think enough people know about? (Hardware or software, work or personal)
It would have to be BlueOptima! Many companies stand to identify compelling software development cost-efficiency gains if they have solution for measuring developer productivity. Getting software development initiatives delivered on-time and on budget is increasingly a strategic imperative for many organisations.

Do you think anything about your personal use of tech would surprise your colleagues? Unfortunately, nothing would surprise my colleagues – aside from being unshockable, they know, and probably despair at the fact that I’m a 24/7 tech geek!
