What was the most valuable piece of career advice that you received?

If you’re the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room!

Surround yourself with smart people and provide an environment for that ‘smart’ to be effected and effective!

 

What was the worst piece of business advice that you received?

“Trust me, it’ll be fine,” said my first bank manager – and it wasn’t!

When you’re starting a business, everyone seems to have an opinion. I’d now be described as a serial entrepreneur, but I started out as a novice very determined to ask as many people as possible for advice, so as to help form my own opinion. ALWAYS go with what you think is best, because at the end of the day, the buck stops with you.

 

What advice would you give to someone starting their career in the tech industry?

If you don’t have 100% belief in what you or your employer is doing, don’t bother. It’s that belief that’s going to give you the energy and tenacity to succeed. There are currently so many game-changing tech companies, so there’s no need to settle for one you don’t feel passionately about.  I try and meet with all new employees and I always say to them if work isn't at least 50% fun, then leave. Life’s too short to be unhappy, particularly given how much time you spend at work.

 

What tips would you give to someone aiming for a c-level position?

Focus on your people and focus on your customers – continually ask them what you can do for them. Too many people in the C-Suite think they know what customers or team want, without actually interacting with them! There really is no time to live in an ivory tower, or even an office today. Talk to them, listen to them, and be flexible enough to adjust your offering accordingly. As CEO I still talk to as many customers as I can. Staying close to them and surrounding yourself with great people will allow you to adapt and reach your career goals faster.

 

Are you particularly proud of any career advice that you’ve given or the career route/development of anyone you’ve mentored?

I always tell people to choose an employer based on culture first – it’s the same way I hire.  You might not have the perfect skillset to apply for a new role, but if you fit in with the team, it’s worth punching above your weight. You can always learn new skills but you can’t always change the environment that will allow you to reach your potential.
