Are the stereotypes about millennials true?

I think the common perceptions around millennials often come from how they portray themselves on social media. I wouldn’t say these perceptions are always necessarily reflective of all millennials, or even the millennials who portray themselves in that way. But the issue with social media is that it’s focused on instant gratification, so many millennials (especially those I left university with) come across as though they’re not up for working hard initially, as they think they’ve got success coming to them.  

 

What benefits most attract you to a new position?

PushON breaks the mold of what it’s like to work for an inner-city business, from supporting employees’ personal and professional growth, to the ethos of the company. So, I had to be a part of it. I think a lot can be said for creating a business environment that people actually want to be part of when it comes to attracting new talent – you spend a lot of your time at work, so it’s important that you share similar values with the people you’ll be working amongst.  

 

In the long term which of the following is most important to you? (Please explain why?) 

  • Career development 
  • Work/ life balance 
  • Salary 

I’d say achieving a good work/life balance is key for me. I want to excel in affiliate marketing, so I can free up some of my time to focus on freelance projects and plan my life outside of work too.

 

What do you think most companies are getting wrong when hiring/ retaining younger workers?

Many companies seem to be replications of ‘The Office’ TV show, as in the offices are bland and they have an archaic outlook to growth and staff investment. But in digital marketing, agencies tend to be at the forefront of what a modern workplace should be - they provide employees with a good work/life balance, the opportunities to progress and an atmosphere of constant development, which fosters a positive attitude and makes people want to work hard.  

 

Looking back, is there anything you’d change about the route you took to your current career?

I wish I’d started digital marketing in high school – this would have helped me build on my knowledge and experience from a younger age. I think there needs to be more opportunities for young people to learn about digital marketing from school age. This will go some way in helping to close the digital skills gap, as more people will be aware that it’s a great career option and that there are plenty of opportunities open to them.
