With traditional provisioning techniques, utilization levels are often surprisingly low. Administrators often over allocate capacity to avoid reconfiguration and downtime. Given all these factors, it is no surprise that written-to-allocated utilization levels are often sub-optimal. In a perfect world, organizations would purchase storage just-in-time for only written-to capacity. IDC believes there is considerable opportunity for suppliers to help their customers utilize their disk storage resources more efficiently.
