A metrics-oriented mindset is key to ensure that DevOps initiatives taken up by infrastructure and operations leaders deliver the intended results. We identify some of the key measurements to track, as well as offer insights into how to prevent negative side effects.

Key Challenges
•     Because DevOps does not have a formal framework, IT organizations attempting to implement DevOps principles and practices are often left with little guidance on to how to measure the effectiveness of their programs.
•    DevOps projects are usually the result of a need to improve support of the business, yet most IT organizations fail to map the newly implemented processes to their business metrics impacts.
•    A DevOps initiative is like any other IT-related project, as there is a danger that the collection and tracking of a metric could result in the development of an undesirable behavior.
•    IT measurement systems are often used to point out (and punish) unintentional defects, rather than as a means to improve the learning process as required for a DevOps environment.
