Data is the new currency in the cyber economy. The Fall 2009 Security Paradox study of midsize businesses, those with 50 to 1000 users, discovered that 29 percent had suffered a data breach in the previous year, and 70 percent of midsize businesses believed there was some chance a serious data breach could put their company out of business. The losses add up fast. According to McAfee's 2009 Unsecured Economies report, companies lost $1 trillion worldwide because of data loss, both malicious and accidental.
