Overview

On 12 May 2017, NHS hospitals in the UK were brought to their knees by one of the most devastating cyberattacks in recent memory, WannaCry.

Unfortunately this was not an isolated incident, WannaCry is part of a frightening new trend. Ransomware has become a particular threat to hospitals and medical devices, with 2016 seeing a string of high-profile ransomware infections.

In this report, Kaspersky Lab explores the reasons why healthcare has become such a target for cybercrime and why they are particularly vulnerable to these attacks. Furthermore, it highlights upcoming pieces of legislation, including GDPR, which aim to address weaknesses in data protection and processes in the healthcare industry. Finally, the report gives guidance on how to protect your organisation from future attacks.
