Enterprise GitHub projects of the week: Oracle special

We look at some of the Open Source projects that can make your life easier.

Open source is everywhere, and quickly becoming the new norm for how companies approach software development. We take at a look at some of the open source projects on GitHub created by Oracle that can help make life easier for IT teams in organizations.

GraalVM

Find it at: https://github.com/oracle/graal

What it does: GraalVM is a universal virtual machine for running applications written in JavaScript, Python, Ruby, R, JVM-based languages like Java, Scala, Clojure, Kotlin, and LLVM-based languages such as C and C++.

Why is it useful: GraalVM aims to remove isolation between programming languages and enable interoperability in a shared runtime. Zero overhead interoperability between programming languages allows you to write polyglot applications and select the best language for your task.

smith

Find it at: https://github.com/oracle/smith

What it does: smith is a simple command line utility for building microcontainers from rpm packages or oci images.

Why is it useful: Containers are quickly becoming a popular method of deploying services. However, stability and security can make running containers a challenge. Microcontainers aim to overcome these challenges by only containing the process to be run and its direct dependencies, having no user ownership or special permissions beyond the executable bit, and making the root filesystem of the container read-only. The smith tool can be used to build a microcontainer from yum repositories or an rpm file.

OpenGrok

Find it at: https://github.com/oracle/opengrok

What it does: OpenGrok is a fast and usable source code search and cross reference engine.

Why is it useful:  Able to understand various program file formats and version control histories of many source code management systems, OpenGrok lets you search, cross-reference and navigate your source tree.
