Karl Campbell

Job title: Regional VP UK & South Africa

  Company: Riverbed Technology

  Location: Johannesburg, South Africa

  Years’ experience: 21

1.            What time do you reach the office each day?
I have a varied lifestyle so generally I am not in the office every day. However, if I am I usually arrive by 8.00am.

2.            Is your job varied?
Yes, very much so. I have regional responsibilities which involve a lot of travel as well as internal and external customer meetings.

3.            Is your job creative?
It’s more creative than you would think. It requires a tremendous amount of creativity with regards to how you engage with customers and how opportunities are secured.

4.            What do you spend the majority of your time doing?
I split my time so that 50% of my time is spent on external activities, whether that’s meetings with partners or customers, as these bring real value to the company. The other 50% is spent on internal activities such as meetings and emails.

5.            Do you personalise your desk?
I don’t have a desk in the office, however I have a very large study at home that has a lot of personalisation due to my 10 year old daughter who regularly puts things on my desk and changes my screensaver.

6.            Would you describe yourself as creative?
Yes, although I would not call myself artistic, I’d say artistic flair is different from creative flair. However, my job involves a lot of creativity and often requires me to think outside the box.

7.            Do you have any quirky daily rituals?
I hate being late. I’m a stickler for time keeping and I have an intolerable obsession with being on time.

8.            Do you tend to work on your own or with colleagues?
I would say that I spend about 90% of my time working with other people, this involves some form of dialogue either internally or externally.

9.            How many hours on average do you work a day?
I usually start my day at 5.30am or 6.00am and finish at 7.00pm, so on average 10-12 hours.

10.          Roughly how much time do you spend each day on email? Taking calls? In meetings?
I probably spend too much time on internal emails and meetings. I try and limit emails to 10% of each day and focus my time on external meetings, in other words customer meetings, as these bring value.

11.          Do you use social media much for work?
I’m not a big social media user, however I occasionally use LinkedIn to share relevant information.

12.          What do you enjoy most about your work?
I enjoy the diversity the most. No two days are the same and there are always new challenges, we are the sharp end of the sword in the company. I also really enjoy trying to win customers, and of course spending time with my colleagues.

13.          What type of music (if any) do you listen to at work?
I don’t during my office hours.

14.          What do you do for lunch?
This varies depending on the nature of my day. If I am with customers, lunch is fairly formal, if I am in the office I will grab a sandwich with colleagues, and if I am on the road there may very well be no lunch. The opportunities of that particular day determine what lunch will be.

15.          Do you socialise with work colleagues?
I get the chance to socialise with my colleagues during work hours, at lunch and during work functions. Outside of work I like to spend time with my family.

16.          Are there any tasks (through your career) you’ve been especially glad to get rid of?
Not really, as long as the task is relevant I don’t’ have a problem with it.

17.          What is your last task of your day?
I always check my emails right before I finish.

18.          How do you like to relax after work?
This depends where I am. In South Africa, if I am out in the bush, I like to do something nature related. I also like to relax with whiskey and a book.

19.          Do you keep checking email through the evening?
I usually check emails up until about 8.00pm and then I will give them one last check before I go to bed.

20.          Do you take work projects home with you?
Yes, there is no downtime in this role.

21.          What would you say to your 20-year old self?
I would tell myself to study architecture or archaeology over engineering.

22.          Ifyou could try out any job for a day, what would you choose?
I’d like to be an archaeologist for a day.

23.          What device did you use to answer these questions?
My laptop.

24.          Do you use your own personal device for work?
I use a mixture of personal and business devices when it comes to work and some of them are connected.
