NetApp HCI and Nutanix: Buyer's guide and reviews

Real IT Central Station users review two of the highest reviewed solutions in the hyperconverged infrastructure market: NetApp HCI and Nutanix.

Businesses are constantly looking to upgrade their infrastructure and provide unparalleled experiences to their customers and workforce. In the last few years, many businesses have steadily been moving towards hyperconverged infrastructure and the benefits it can offer over traditional approaches to infrastructure. Yet, choosing the right hyperconverged solution isn't easy - every business is different, and there is no ‘one size fits all' solution.

Over 388,000 professionals have used IT Central Station research to inform their purchasing decisions. Its latest paper looks at NetApp HCI and Nutanix, two of the highest reviewed solutions in the hyperconverged infrastructure market.

Below is a brief summary of the report, highlighting what real IT Central Station users think of each solution - from their most valuable features, to how they've improved individual businesses, as well as what each solution could do better.

NetApp HCI

A true enterprise-scale hyperconverged cloud infrastructure solution

With an average rating of 8.0 from 26 reviews, NetApp HCI is a strong option for businesses considering upgrading their infrastructure and implementing hyperconverged throughout their organisation. Deployed largely throughout the insurance, financial services, and pharmaceutical sectors, Nutanix's offering has found a place in all types of companies - from those with less than 200 employees to large multi-nationals with workforces of over 1000 people.

Discussing NetApp HCI's benefits, users often point to the scalability of the solution, and the density of the system as hardware. Both features help set NetApp HCI apart from the crowd and make it one of the more appealing options on the market.

However, the solution still has room to improve. Critics lament its implementation process, arguing that its complexity is a key issue that needs to be addressed moving forward. In particular, users would appreciate if NetApp was able to minimise the steps it takes to initiate the solution.

Delivering invisible infrastructure for next generation enterprise computing

Achieving an average rating of 8.9 from 14 reviews, Nutanix provides its customers with a first rate solution that can meet the majority of enterprise needs. This is reflected in the numerous industries the solution finds itself implemented, from government organisations to healthcare and energy/utilities companies. The solution also proves popular at organisations of all sizes, however bigger companies (1000+) seem to implement it the most, with 37% of reviewers hailing from a larger business.

Some of the best features users highlight with the solution surround data locality, compression, and deduplication, as well as its high level of statistical performance data. These features combine to offer a seamless experience, making Nutanix's platform easy to work on which its customers seem to appreciate.

Despite its high rating, Nutanix's offering isn't perfect. Some critics mention networking issues, whilst others have highlighted the mail, application, and database servers as areas that could do with slight improvement. These issues may be overlooked in cheaper options, but because of Nutanix's high price point in comparison to its competitors, users expect more finesse.
