Commvault and Veritas NetBackup: Which is the best backup solution?

A comparison of two of the highest rated backup solutions in the market, with profiles of each and what they can offer enterprise.

Traditional backup and recovery needs an overhaul. The solutions of yesteryear now struggle to keep up with the expectation and requirements of enterprise, resulting in a marketplace full of uncertainty. Today, any IT professional selecting a backup investment must consider whether a new approach is needed. However, choosing the right solution isn't easy - every business is different, and there is no ‘one size fits all' solution.

Over 388,000 professionals have used IT Central Station research to inform their purchasing decisions. Its latest paper looks at Commvault and Veritas NetBackup, two of the highest reviewed solutions in the backup and recovery software market.

Below is a brief summary of the report, highlighting what real IT Central Station users think of each solution - from their most valuable features, to how they've improved individual businesses, as well as what each solution could do better.

Enabling you to protect, access, and use all of your data anywhere and anytime

With an average rating of 8.7 from 13 reviews, Commvault has successfully positioned itself as a key player in the backup and recovery software market. Deployed throughout a range of industries, Commvault has proved popular with comms service providers, wholesaler/distributors, and financial services firms. These businesses also constitute various sizes - 29% of reviewers come from organisations with less than 200 employees, whilst 36% claim to have workforces in excess of 1000 employees.

When evaluating the solution, many users point to its single console as an excellent feature which assists with control of all necessary functions. This feature is further complimented by an intuitive, easy-to-use user interface and high-quality reporting. Yet for all its positive features, Commvault is not perfect. Critics argue that the solution is not easily deployed and believe that it doesn't provide adequate enough cloud support.

Veritas NetBackup

Reduces the complexity of data protection and increase the agility of IT

Achieving an average rating of 8.5 from 11 reviews, Veritas NetBackup is another strong offering that customers should seriously consider implementing. Similarly to Commvault, Veritas has found a home at comms service provider and financial services firms, moreover it has also proved popular at healthcare related organisations. More prevalent at larger organisations with over 1000 employees, Veritas' solution is still sought after by mid-sized (200-1000 employees) organisations and smaller business with less than 200 employees.

Veritas' advocates believe that the solution comes equipped with a good dashboard alongside strong reporting and performance capabilities. Most agree that these features also come at a more than reasonable price. However, the solution could be improved by providing a more user friendly interface and a stronger focus on including sandbox features.
