What was the most valuable piece of career advice that you received?

Do what you love. That assumes getting to know yourself and what is really important to you beyond just a paycheque.

What was the worst piece of business advice that you received?

This is hard to answer since any advice you receive can be valuable in some way. I’ve been lucky to be surrounded with business mentors that are much more experienced than I am, and even if the advice is out of context or not applicable, I can still learn something from it.

What advice would you give to someone starting their career in the tech industry?

Develop well-rounded experience early on. By well-rounded I mean a deep understanding of how technology works, then combine this with the fundamentals of business and management.

The next phase in the tech industry will involve the integration of technology with other industries and business models. If you understand this integration between technology and business, it will make a bigger impact.

What tips would you give to someone aiming for a c-level position?

Develop sales skills early on in your career. At C-level you are expected to sell yourself and your ideas, strategies, products and organization’s structure. If you learn the key fundamentals of sales and how to drive goal-driven results, you are on your way to succeed.

Are you particularly proud of any career advice that you’ve given or the career route/development of anyone you’ve mentored?

I am proud to say that most members of our team here at Nexmo who joined early on in their career have emerged to become high impact business leaders in just a couple of years.
