  Name: Richard Britton

  Job title: Co-Founder & CEO

  Company: CloudSense

  Location: London, UK

  Years’ experience: 18

1.       What time do you reach the office each day?

I start work at 6am in my home office and get into the CloudSense office by 8:30am.

2.       Is your job varied?

Yes, every day is different, that’s what makes it interesting!

3.       Is your job creative?

I work with a very creative team in a new and emerging space, so there is constant innovation and creativity.

4.       What do you spend the majority of your time doing?

My time is spent talking and coaching. Businesses are about people and whether it is my own team that I am working with to achieve success or a customer, the most progressive outcomes are achieved through dialogue.

5.       Do you personalise your desk?

Everyone at CloudSense, including me, works at hot desks. And, of course I personalize my Mac desktop!

6.       Would you describe yourself as creative?

In business as in everyday life, it’s important to have a rounded set of skills for each unique situation that we face. Certain situations require creativity and I’d like to think I add value in those situations.

7.       Do you have any quirky daily rituals?

Not that I know of, but my family or colleagues might say otherwise!

8.       Do you tend to work on your own or with colleagues?

In my role it is essential to work with people and I tend to do that about 80% of the time.

9.       How many hours on average do you work a day?

I am afraid I don’t track it; every day is different so it’s hard to say. As a CEO, there is always plenty to do.

10.   Roughly how much time do you spend each day on email? Taking calls? In meetings?

I have learned that email alone is not a productive way to spend my time and I try and limit it to no more than 30 minutes a day. I will spend a lot more time on calls and in meetings, as I find they are very effective. However, it is important to agree to the agenda and intended outcomes at the start of a meeting in order to use the time well.

11.   Do you use social media much for work?

Yes, daily, since CloudSense is a global company, social media is what binds our employees across the world and helps with collaboration and idea generation.

12.   What do you enjoy most about your work?

The people! My colleagues are talented and interesting people and my customers are progressive and ambitious.

13.   What type of music (if any) do you listen to at work?

I don’t listen to music at work except at company events, and even then I don’t get to choose the tunes!

14.   What do you do for lunch?

I prefer a light lunch.

15.   Do you socialize with work colleagues?

Yes, I enjoy the people I work with! That is one of the things that makes CloudSense a great place, being able to socialize outside of work with colleagues is refreshing.

16.   Are there any tasks (through your career) you’ve been especially glad to get rid of?

I had a summer job as a student, cleaning used surgical instruments at a hospital; I never really wanted to make a career of that.

17.   What is your last task of your day?

My to-do list for the next day!

18.   How do you like to relax after work?

I enjoy spending time with family and friends.

19.   Do you keep checking email through the evening?

If something is important, I will get a call. Email late at night does not help anyone.

20.   Do you take work projects home with you?

Of course, I can do my job with just a smart phone and a bunch of apps - that is the benefit of the age we live in - so I do work from home.

21.   What would you say to your 20-year old self?

Try hard and don’t except no for an answer. Soak up experiences now, because you can put that experience to work when you start your own business.

22.   If you could try out any job for a day, what would you choose?

A boat builder

23.   What device did you use to answer these questions?

24.   Do you use your own personal device for work?

Yes, I do!
