IT departments face significant challenges in improving the performance of their core applications, and many organisations are struggling to overcome them. For businesses aiming to deliver a high level of customer satisfaction, they require an application performance management solution that allows applications to be delivered fit for purpose. However, choosing the right solution isn't easy - every business is different, and there is no ‘one size fits all' solution.

Over 388,000 professionals have used IT Central Station research to inform their purchasing decisions. Its latest paper looks at Dynatrace and New Relic APM, two of the highest reviewed solutions in the application performance management market.

Below is a brief summary of the report, highlighting what real IT Central Station users think of each solution - from their most valuable features, to how they've improved individual businesses, as well as what each solution could do better.

Dynatrace

Redefining how you monitor today's digital ecosystems

With an average rating of 8.8 from 63 reviews, Dynatrace is one of the most frequently reviewed solutions in the APM market. Reviewers come from a range of industries, including financial services, insurance, and retail firms. Of these reviewers, most (75%) come from large companies with over 1000 employees, while midsize and smaller organisations make up 14% and 11% of reviewers respectively.

Advocates of Dynatrace often cite how it helps them to improve code efficiency and deliver quicker performance analysis when compared to other APM solutions. Highly accurate monitoring features also ensure that businesses can have synthetic checks and real-user monitoring of all of their websites and digital arenas where members and providers can interact with them. Despite these features, Dynatrace does still have some critics. Some argue that the price point of the solution is too high, or that it could also benefit from better dashboarding and more templates for business reporting.

New Relic APM

A software analytics and APM solution that gives users in-depth data visibility and analytics

Achieving an average rating of 8.4 from 18 reviews, New Relic APM is a very strong option for those considering a new APM solution. It has enjoyed success at a diverse range of organisations, particularly those in the financial services, media, and computer software industries. New Relic APM differs from Dynatrace in that the majority of its users work at smaller organisations. 33% of reviewers come from organisations with over 1000 employees, whilst small and midsize businesses take a 38% and 29% share each.

New Relic APM's plaudits believe that the end-user synthetics and monitoring capabilities it offers are both very good. The solution also benefits from strong baseline level alerting features and an excellent dashboard. Where the solution falls short, however, is the deployment process, with critics highlighting it as a key area for improvement. Alongside this, users would also like to see predictive analytics introduced as an additional feature and would appreciate if changes could be made to the APIs so that they can integrate more with streaming solutions.
