Secondly, IT leaders should look to be more than just the technology expert in driving digital transformation efforts. While knowing the technology is important, a successful IT leader will show up as a stakeholder that can also help drive that digital transformation strategy through other means. One critical lesson I have learned is that my success depends on my ability to clearly communicate. I view myself as not only the CIO, but also as the chief communications officer for digital transformation. To be successful, I have learned the importance of establishing clear lines of communication with every member of the C-suite and every employee. This requires a completely different skillset and mindset.
What has been your greatest career achievement? One of my greatest career achievements is playing a role in developing the next class of great IT leaders, many of which are CIOs today. CIOs are increasingly being handed the keys to drive digital transformation throughout the organisation, including areas that have been traditionally outside their purview. I work closely with many of today’s CIO, helping them become strategic drivers of change and coaching them to partner with the C-suite to improve employee and customer experiences.
Looking back with 20:20 hindsight, what would you have done differently? In retrospect, I wish I could go back and tell myself to remember to take a step back and enjoy the journey you’re on. And I would tell myself to invest more in relationships. After all, in my job, the hallmark of success is the ability for CIOs to be more than technologists – at the end of the day, as technology proliferates through an organisation, a human-centered approach is critical to driving the best results.
What are you reading now? Right now, I’m reading a book about a man who pulled off one of the biggest financial scams in history called Billion Dollar Whale: The Man Who Fooled Wall Street, Hollywood, and the World. I generally gravitate to non-fiction business-oriented books, and I chose this one because of its incredible story. Most people don't know that I… Like to cook. In my spare time, I like to…Spend time with my family. Ask me to do anything but… Maintain the status quo. |
