Secret CSO: John Germain, Duck Creek Technologies, Inc

What do you feel is the most important aspect of your job? "For me it is building relationships. Cybersecurity is challenging because you need to partner and communicate with all parts and levels of an organisation."

What has been your greatest career achievement? I take a tremendous amount of pride in helping the people that have worked with me become successful in their careers. My hope is that the values I learned early in my career are something that I have been able to pass on to others. You may have noticed I intentionally try not to say worked FOR me. I am truly uncomfortable in saying anyone works for me. We are all partners towards the same goals; I just happen to be the person who provides some leadership and guidance. Anyway, what I am most proud of is the people who have worked with me that have gone on to become leaders of security programs at other organisations. There are about a half dozen or so individuals that have moved on to their own leadership roles, and it really brings great joy to me when I see what they have done. Each of them worked so hard and deserve every bit of success they have achieved. I am just so proud of them all.

Looking back with 20:20 hindsight, what would you have done differently? I have no regrets at all. I am so blessed in my career and my life and I would not change anything. Even the mistakes. The people I have met or worked with and the experiences I have had have all led me to where I am today.

What is your favourite quote? "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Basically, the Golden Rule. That or I also like “Is there air? You don’t know!” The latter is from a movie, free Duck Creek polo to whomever answers correctly first.

What are you reading now? Right now, I am reading a book authored by Todd Fitzgerald called the CISO Compass. It is basically the thoughts and wisdom of some of the finest CISO’s in the industry compiled into one place. Great resource for anyone working on being a successful CISO.

In my spare time, I like to… Mostly spend time with my wife and son and the rest of my family. I play guitar and bass, and we have a band with some friends, including my wife and brother, called Subourbon on the Rocks. We actually played our first gig at a local establishment just before the pandemic shut everything down. Guess my career as a rock star will be stalled for a while. Love to golf as well and my wife and I foster animals. Well, my wife does, and I basically try not to get in the way. Love to travel as well.

Most people don't know that I… Have my own IMDB page with credits as an actor and a producer. My son is a film maker, so he is the real star, but like I said, a good CISO needs to have a little experience in just about everything.

Ask me to do anything but… Well my wife says laundry, but I am not sure that is fair. I guess I would have to say don’t ask me to drink whiskey.
