Given the exponential increase in data, it can be difficult for companies to access relevant data and act on it quickly. With new levels of data to process, many traditional data centres are struggling to offer the same performance levels, and businesses are now looking for new ways to store, access, and analyse their data more effectively. For many, this has meant turning to cloud data warehouses and the opportunities they can offer. However, choosing the right solution isn’t easy – every business is different, and there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution.

Over 388,000 professionals have used IT Central Station research to inform their purchasing decisions. Its latest paper looks at Microsoft Azure Synapse Analytics and Snowflake, two of the highest reviewed solutions in the cloud data warehouse market.

Below is a brief summary of the report, highlighting what real IT Central Station users think of each solution – from their most valuable features, to how they’ve improved individual businesses, as well as what each solution could do better.

Microsoft Azure Synapse Analytics

A fast, flexible, and secure analytics platform for the enterprise

With an average rating of 7.9 from 28 reviews, Microsoft Azure Synapse Analytics is one of the most frequently reviewed solutions by IT Central Station users. Popular in the computer software, manufacturing, and insurance industries, the product is utilised by businesses of all sizes. Large organisations with over 1000 employees make up 48% of reviewers, whilst midsize and small businesses account for 24% and 27% respectively.

Users of Microsoft’s offering often praise its scalability, with some claiming it to be one of the solution’s most important features. Good interactivity, flexibility, and stability, all combine on top of this scalability to ensure the product provides an exceptional experience to users. Despite this, there are still a few areas of concern that critics have highlighted. One, is that its documentation needs to be improved so that it can compete better with rival products. Second, is that the solution needs more integration so that it can operate more effectively in the future.

Snowflake

Provides a data warehouse built for the cloud

Achieving an average rating of 8.3 from 23 reviews, Snowflake is also a very popular choice amongst users. Computer software, manufacturing, and financial services firms make up the largest share of reviewers, and users come from both small and large organisations. 78% of reviewers are part of larger businesses, while small and midsize companies share the remaining percentage at 5% and 17% each.

The solution’s ease of use, speed, and performance, all rank highly by Snowflake reviewers. It also provides solid technical support and an advanced syntax which helps to reduce the time it takes to write code. In all, the solution can meet most of its users’ various needs. However, some critics argue that Snowflake could be made even more secure, whilst others believe that its functionality needs to be broadened so it can offer even better experiences to users.
