What is your favourite personal gadget?
Garmin 920XT, multisport watch! However, I’m afraid it’s going to become redundant before I learn how to use it properly as smart watches evolve and take over.

Do you have a favourite piece of personal software?
My Tide Times – to work out when I should be fishing with my son – I don’t want to get to the coast and find out that there are no fish about…!

What was the first piece of technology you got really excited about?
Commodore 64! Do you remember Zork? There were no images, it was just a text based game (much like a book really, but interactive) – Wow that makes me feel really old, I’m 38…

What device improves your life most at work?
My bicycle. It gives me a chance to think unencumbered by email, phone, video etc…

What software keeps you most productive at work?
IM (including WhatsApp), because it cuts through the email chatter.

Is there any technology that has become extinct that you would like to resurrect?
I don’t think they have become extinct but rather evolved – what’s the difference between a centralised IBM mainframe and the cloud; other than perception…

Is there any technology you would personally recommend that you don’t think enough people know about? (Hardware or software, work or personal)
A Wi-Fi enabled dog ball with a camera so that you can play with your dog when you are not at home. I don’t have one and my dog always has company but it sounds clever…!

Do you think anything about your personal use of tech would surprise your colleagues?
Absolutely not – however the use of tech often blinds people to its uses – I talk to a lot of small businesses/starts ups about the use of applications and in many cases they are fixated on the benefit to the user of the app (e.g. dating/food/sport) rather than how the information the app generates can change the businesses that provide the end service. Efficiency is sitting at our finger tips and we don’t know it’s there. A recent example being how Google are using Deep Mind AI to decide where they place their infrastructure to best use power – great for the environment, obvious to a computer, hard for a human and cheaper…
