Africa’s missed opportunity in the multi-billion dollar mobile phone industry

According to latest statistics by GSMA, unique mobile users in the African continent will reach over 634 million by 2025. This remarkable adoption of mobile use has buoyed the economy by contributing US$110 billion in economic value in Africa and it will top US$150 billion by 2022.  

“The regional subscriber base will grow at a CAGR of 4.8% for the period 2017–2022, more than double the global growth rate over the same period. The penetration rate is forecast to reach the 50% level by the end of 2023, and 52% by 2025,” the GSMA report said.

The world view is that Africa is winning in the mobile adoption race, increasing connectivity and innovation around the mobile phone.  

However, there has been a misstep in the continent’s adoption of mobile phone technology. The continent has missed a multi-billion dollar opportunity in the mobile phone adoption chain:

Mobile phone manufacturing is virtually non-existent in Africa.
