Forward-looking Singapore focuses on AI

Singapore has long been recognized for its forward-looking adoption of cutting-edge technology - and there are growing indications that the country looks set to continue this approach in the burgeoning artificial intelligence (AI) sector. So what are the most recent AI developments in Singapore? What is the long-term potential for it to develop as a globally significant centre of expertise in AI? And what is the current and potential role of IT professionals?

AI Singapore

One of the most interesting ongoing initiatives in the country is AI Singapore (AISG), a national program recently launched by the National Research Foundation (NRF) to catalyse, synergize and boost Singapore's AI capabilities in an effort to bolster a future digital economy. The program is driven by a government-wide partnership comprising NRF, the Smart Nation and Digital Government Office (SNDGO), the Economic Development Board (EDB), the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), SGInnovate, and the Integrated Health Information Systems (IHiS).

As Laurence Liew, Director - AI Industry Innovation at AISG, explains, AISG will also bring together all Singapore-based research institutions, alongside what he describes as the 'vibrant ecosystem' of AI start-ups and companies developing AI products, to perform 'use-inspired research, grow the knowledge, create the tools, and develop the talent to power Singapore's AI efforts.'

The principal vehicle employed by AISG to broaden the use and adoption of artificial intelligence in Singapore is the 100 AI Experiments (100E) programme, aimed at companies with what Liew calls a 'significant industry problem.'
