Cloud Supercomputing (part 4): How will it help society?

In this four-part series we consult a panel of 12 experts to determine the role of cloud supercomputing now and in the future. Part four looks at the impact this is likely to have on society.

“Cloud computing will bring high performance solutions out of the research labs and large corporates and into the mainstream. Through the cloud anyone will be able to dial up high performance cloud services on demand, enabling smaller businesses to analyse large amounts of data. Once the current barrier of accessing high performance cloud is breached, access to cloud supercomputing will be democratised. This could have a significant impact on areas such as medicine, where on demand cloud supercomputing can help scientists tailor medicine to patients’ genetic make-up as genomes can be sequenced faster and more efficiently.”

One example of supercomputing is working with DNA sequencing and genomes. One of our customers, Coriell Life Sciences, bridges the gap between genomic information and patient care by bringing genetic interpretations into physicians’ hands in a way that’s clinically relevant and humanly readable. The company’s technology can look at a patient’s genetic makeup and determine whether a prescribed drug will be beneficial to a patient, if the patient will have an adverse reaction, and how a typical dose might be adjusted for the patient—all before the drug is prescribed.”

Altruistically, data being generated by the Internet of Devices is destined to help improve our lifestyles. Cloud supercomputing will play a huge part in this but a big measure of common sense and maturity is needed when it comes to security. For society to accept insights derived from cloud supercomputing, security checks need to be prioritised across the end-to-end platform.  This ensures that data integrity is preserved.”
