What was the most valuable piece of career advice that you received?

The most valuable advice I was given actually comes from the Baz Luhrmann song ‘Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)’: “Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.” To me, this highlights that there is never a perfect ‘case study’ for success and it ultimately comes down to hard work, with a little bit of luck.

What advice would you give to someone starting their career in the tech industry?

Define success. As I’ve already mentioned there is no one route to success, there are many paths, but in order to start that journey you must know what success ultimately looks like.

What tips would you give to someone aiming for a c-level position?

If a C-level position is your ‘success’, then you have to understand your route to get there and the skills that you bring to the table. It’s also important to have role models along the way, not just the same type of leader, but a variety and with different stories on how they got there. This will help you to understand and plan your route to success.

Are you particularly proud of any career advice that you’ve given or the career route/development of anyone you’ve mentored?

I was proud and excited to have the opportunity to speak at a TEDx event in Greece a couple of years ago now, where I was able to speak to some young entrepreneurs about challenges of building a global tech company in my home country, as well as the opportunities. The response I got from the talk was great and I am still in touch with some of the people I spoke to that day.
