Name:  Lori Wright

Organisation: TIBCO Software

Job title: Chief Marketing Officer

 Location:  Palo Alto, California

 (1) Where were you born and raised?

Winter Haven, Florida

(2) What was your first job?

I started working at my Dad’s company when I was 10 years old. At 15, I moved outside of the family business and worked as a sales clerk at the local gym.

(3) What was the first product you got really excited about?

I’ve always been a fan of electronics. Atari 2600 was my first love, followed by the Apple II, Nintendo 64, and later the Nintendo Gameboy.

(4) Who has been the biggest influence on your career?

My Dad has had the biggest influence on teaching me the mechanics of business and the importance of relationships in business. I’ve had several other domain mentors who are world-class in specific areas. I’ve tried to take their influences and make them into something that is authentic to me.

(5) What has been your greatest achievement?

Balancing the pursuit of my work passions while raising young children and being a good partner to my husband is, by far, my greatest achievement.

(6) What has been your biggest mistake?

I’ve made many—and most of them happened when I rushed to judgement. My natural bias is towards action, so I get impatient when things are not happening quickly enough. Wisdom has taught me to slow down and consider all aspects before making major decisions.

(7) What is your greatest strength?

I build good teams who I trust completely and then get out of their way.

(8) What is your biggest weakness?

I like order and perfection in a world that is not orderly or perfect.

(9) What do you think is the aspect of your role most neglected by peers?

Truly understanding how you and your team contribute to the bottom line

(10) Which word or phrase is your mantra and which word or phrase makes you squirm?

Mantra: Stop and Look Around

Word that Makes Me Squirm: Irregardless

(11) What makes you stressed?

Not having enough time to do all the things I want to do

(12) What do you do to relax?

Find a quiet place outside to reflect on all the beauty in life

(13) What is your favourite song?

Any song by Jack Johnson

(14) Which book taught you most?

I learn the most from children’s books. They simplify most of life’s complexities down to the essentials.

(15) Do you have a team or sport that you follow?

No, but I have a huge respect for athletes who play at the top of their game because of the level of determination and commitment it takes to get there.

(16) Which country would you like to work in?

(17) Which company do you think has the best marketing?

Bottled water companies

(18) What do you love most about your job?

Working with people to find good ideas and bring them to life

The Great Gatsby

(20) What keeps you awake at night?

My 5-month old baby!
