Spotify's family plan goes toe-to-toe with Apple and Google

Spotify is still the top music streaming service, but it may be feeling the heat from better family deals on Apple Music and Google Play. Spotify announced on Monday that its $15-per-month family plan will match those of Apple Music and Google Play by offering six individual premium accounts for the package price.

Spotify’s new family plan is a big price drop from its previous plan. When it launched in late 2014, $15 got you two Spotify premium memberships, and each one after that cost an extra $5. That plan maxed out at five people for $30.

Now, less than two years later, Spotify is willing to cut that top price in half and add an extra user. Clearly, this is a reaction to the better family plans of Spotfiy's competitors—and perhaps the popularity of such plans.

However, Spotify’s change may be more about getting ahead of any potential threats rather than reacting to a loss of subscribers, as growth appears to be strong. Spotify CEO Daniel Ek said via Twitter in March that Spotify subscriptions had hit 30 million—up from 20 million in June 2015. Apple Music, meanwhile, was believed to have 10 million subscribers as of January—about six months after launch.

The impact on you at home: Current family plan subscribers should be able to access the new plan right away, and new subscribers can sign up for the plan now. The new plan is available to subscribers in every country where Spotify is available excluding Canada. Pricing will vary depending on your location.
